Q: Is There Only One Type of Asylum Status?

Full question: I heard someone say that you can get political asylum if you’re involved in politics. I’m not in politics. Is that the only kind of asylum you can get?

Answer: Historically, many people who fled communism in Cuba were granted political asylum in the United States, so most people believed that was the only way to obtain asylum in the United States. However, asylum is not only available for political reasons. Asylum is a type of immigration status given to people who have been persecuted or fear they will be persecuted because of their race, religion, nationality, and/or membership in a particular social group or political affiliation.

In order order to apply for asylum, you must be in the United States and generally, you must submit your application within a year of entering the United States.

The process of obtaining Asylum can be lengthy and complicated. If you have questions about whether you might qualify for asylum and/or need help with your application, please contact us.
